Rising to the challenge of breaking through in the music industry is never an easy task, but one American vocalist is ploughing her way to the top with unhindered charisma and sheer style in her quest to show the world her talent. With the likes of Richard Durand, Wally Lopez and Serge Devant turned on to her unique vocal stylings, Dan Carter caught up with Hadley to talk fashion, passion and the road to global domination.
Since taking the leap into the exciting and unpredictable world of EDM, the vigorous passion of the New York based vocalist saw her cross over from classical to Electronic music with little thought. She explained: ‘I grew up taking classical piano lessons and trying to put a rock band together when I was in middle school, but one day I found a producer advertising for a singer/writer for some of his electronic tracks. The process and outcome just felt so right and from there on I was addicted.’
That addiction would later lead to a handful of outright club anthems alongside the likes of Brooklyn based producer Serge Devant and writing partner Danny Inzerillo; the force behind the tracks that truly emphasized the floor filling capability of Hadley’s vocal ability. As a result of his keenness towards the young singer’s raw talent, Hadley has remained very grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Devant and Inzerillo over the years. ‘Serge was really one of the first producers that I connected with in the house scene, and one that really opened the door for me,’ she explained.
‘He’s been incredible and I look at him as not only one of my best friends but as a mentor as well. Danny has also been such a big part of the tracks and the world will definitely be hearing more from him. Working with them feels like a dream collaboration team to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with them over the years.’
Whilst Hadley has enjoyed this union of Devant and Inzerillo, the global industry has clearly enjoyed the final outcome. Having dominated the airwaves with such infectious anthems as ‘Ghost’ and ‘Addicted’, this mentoring under the watchful eyes of Devant has created an artist strong in spirit and capability who remains proud of her music, but unafraid to push the boundaries. ‘The creative process has become really fun and I will always run my ideas by Serge or Danny because they know me so well and understand what I am capable of. Be it ‘Ghost’ or ‘Addicted’, each one came so naturally and I think that is a sure sign of a great studio equation.’
Her latest triumph comes just in time for the summer alongside celebrated Trance producer/ recently established sunrise seeker Richard Durand for ‘Run To You’; the highly anticipated single for Durand’s ‘In Search of Sunrise 9: India’ compilation. Having stood back from Trance to focus on her passion of modern House music, Hadley was thrilled to return to this exciting genre alongside one of the industry’s most well renowned keepers of atmospheric summer Trance anthems. She explained: ‘This is a special track for because it is the first Trance release I have done in years, so it is very exciting to release it with Richard for such a great album. I recorded the vocals on Christmas eve last year so to see the track released finally is incredibly satisfying and it feels so right to release it now amongst the excitement of summer!’
As well as sounding the part, Hadley is an artist that insists on looking the part. In New York, this isn’t so hard, especially if you have the likes of designer sensation Richard Lowe behind your style and wardrobe the whole way. As her career has continued to flourish, her commitment to image and detail has established her as one of EDM’s most stylish contenders, an element which Hadley believes is a vital one in the modern industry. ‘Not only do I want to look the part but it’s also about feeling the part,’ she explained. ‘It’s all about stepping into the moment when you’re on stage, your music takes you there but your brand does as well – and clothing is certainly part of it.’
She added: ’Richard (Lowe) has really helped open my eyes to so many different opportunities and has helped me take parts of my career to the next level, such as his connecting me to Jovani – an incredible fashion company based in New York. I’ve had the opportunity to work with them on parts of my tour and they’ve been so much fun to collaborate with.’
Not only is Hadley the stylish face of global EDM’s shining potential in modern music, but a personification the heart, soul and courage required of the modern recording artist in the unpredictable climate of the music industry. ‘Having the support of people worldwide has been insane. 99% of my shows are overseas; it really has been a dream come true. Has it been hard? Absolutely! But that is just the journey of an artist; we can’t quit because a true artist keeps moving towards their dreams because it’s all we know, it’s all we can see.’
But the night is still young for Hadley and with all heads turned to summer floor filler alongside Richard Durand, the future is full of promise for this charismatic vocal sensation who is not afraid to test the waters of change in order to spread her name across the globe. She explained: ‘I am excited to link up with more amazing EDM producers in the future, but I also want to start mixing up genres a little bit more. One of my all-time favorite artists is Eminem; I would love to do a track with him!’

Richard Durand Discusses Collaboration with HADLEY

Having dropped his latest addition to the In Search of Sunrise brand amongst the hysteria already surrounding his latest artist album, ‘Wide Awake’, to say that catching Richard Durand on a day off takes some doing is one hell of an understatement. However, on the dawn of his latest escapade in search of the quintessential soundtrack to the incomparable beauty of summer morning’s sunrise, Durand took some time out from his sun kissed antics to chat to Dan Carter about his highly anticipated second instalment to the ISOS series: India, his forthcoming single ‘Explode’ and life on the road for a producer in full pursuit of the ultimate collection of Summer anthems.
The Search For Sunrise
In 2010, a new dawn saw the Dutch pioneer of uplifting Tech-tinged Trance take the reigns of one of the world’s most renowned compilation series to date, following seven chapters of spiritually unhindered summer anthems from illustrious Netherlands peer turned super-producer Tiesto. The task was not an easy one, but Durand has strived to ensure that his own instalments have continued to raise the divine standard and emotive energy of this legendary brand of uplifting Trance to the masses this summer. ‘Taking over from Tiesto was definitely a challenge for me,’ explained Durand. “I have strived to create something that fitted into the existing ISOS brand whilst giving it my own personal touch.’
Leaping from last year’s emotive outing to South Africa for 2010’s ISOS 8, the ninth leg of the renowned series relocates the sunrise-seeking legacy bestowed upon Durand to the tropics of India for his second take on the summer season’s imperative soundtrack. Reflecting on his choice of India as the basis for his latest instalment, Durand explained: ‘The choice of location for ISOS 9 is very personal to me because I love India. It is one of my favorite countries to play gigs. The people in India really supported me in the beginning of my career, so it is also a tribute to the people as well as its diverse culture.
‘What truly separates ISOS9 from ‘South Africa’ is that the intro track of CD 1 was made by a production duo from India called ‘lost stories’, so you can hear the Indian influence from the very beginning of this album!’
Such a prestigious brand of compilations begs a diverse collection of original tracks capturing the elegance and emotion attributed to ISOS; an idea that each installment has strived to attribute to the uplifting collection of sun kissed anthems. With the likes of Zoo Brazil, George Acosta, Jonas Steur and Andy Duguid amongst the returning contributors to ISOS 9, Durand was keen to continue the exclusive tradition of the tradition of exclusivity within his own additions to the already sterling back-catalogue of compilations. ‘The big difference between ISOS and other compilations is that they are all new productions that were specially made for the album. This is pretty rare on other compilation CDs, making it an album made by various artists, which I feel is pretty unique thing to do.’
Whilst a number of fresh offerings bless ISOS 9: India, Richard has contributed two very exclusive vocal numbers to the equation; ‘Diamonds In The Sky’ with the legendary queen of vocal Trance Julie Thompson and ‘Run To You’, featuring rising American vocalist Hadley. ‘I really wanted to have two vocal tracks on this album and with Wide Awake coming out so close to this, they had to be originals. Julie Thompson and I have known each other for a long time and so we finally got together in the studio and created ‘Diamonds In The Sky’, which is a really upbeat and positive track for the compilation,’ he explained, adding: ‘Working with Hadley was great and whilst this track is a lot deeper than the prior, it sits well within the compilation and I am really happy about the way it came out.’
The succession of two records in three months has often spooked producers with worries of overshadowing the prior and drawing away from the sweet feeling of success and musical accomplishment. Durand, however, remains completely comfortable in his latest ISOS instalment following his latest studio album Wide Awake so closely. ‘I didn’t feel any pressure in the two records dropping so close to one another, but it definitely made me think hard about both records,’ he explained. ‘As a result of this, I made a very conscious decision that I wanted to give ISOS 9 and my own album different sounds, which is why Wide Awake is a bit rougher in sound compared to the more uplifting sounds of the ISOSseries.’
Shortly following the highly anticipated ISOS 9 is Durand’s latest single from Wide Awake; ‘Explode’. Having penned this unique track thanks to a chance encounter on MySpace, George Acosta and Jacob Plant provide the remixes for a unique release package following title-track Wide Awake. Durand explained: ‘I actually found Kash on MySpace not so long ago and thought he had a really unique voice, so we spent some time in the studio together and we came up with ‘Explode’. He’s a really cool guy to work with and for me, this is a really exciting record to release from the album!’
The Horizon Ahead
But as the annual ISOS compilation marks, this is the start of one of the most manic and demanding periods for any artist as accomplished as Richard Durand. With the release of ISOS 9: India, Richard will embark on the second leg of the adjoining world tour, making stops in London, America and of course, India, to road test his essential collection of summer anthems whilst exposing his own hard work encapsulated in Wide Awake. Durand explained: ‘It is really amazing to see all the positive reactions from all the people who come to the ISOS parties. We did the kick-off on the ‘Ocean Diva’, a boat in Amsterdam, which was sold-out and was a truly awesome night! One of the highs of this tour is definitely going to be playing in India, given that the album is centered on the place I’m already looking forward to returning!’
Renowned for taking his studio work along for the ride, Durand remains one of the most active producers in the game. Despite the constant pressures of life on the move and the frantic touring schedules endured to ensure no port is neglected, Richard feels that this in an intrinsically positive method for absorbing the warmth of new culture and essential experience within his own work. ‘When I am on the road and trying to produce I never feel under real pressure; I actually really enjoy producing new tracks whilst I am on the road. There are so many awesome things that inspire you, especially if you go to the many bigger festivals across the globe like I do. I am glad I get the chance to produce ‘en route’ because it seems to make all the difference.’
The Thrill Lives On
What really stands out about Richard’s journey of musical absolution is that despite the exhausting nature of life on the road and the ferocious climate surrounding the music industry, the skies are still bright with hope for Richard Durand as he continues to inject positivity into every project he touches, his latest instalment of ISOS emphasising the impressive heights that the Dutch artist has risen to over the years. ‘If things couldn’t get any better then I feel that life would get boring,’ he explained. “There is so much going on in the music industry and with the whole social media explosion that is currently happening that you are constantly on your toes trying to think of new ways to innovate. There is still plenty ahead to look forward to, but what I am certain of is that the summer is going to be an awesome one!’
As Richard Durand continues to lead the way with the most natural of lights, his passion and dedication to the world of energetic and spiritual Dance music remains a beacon to lovers of the summer season and his unique blend of uplifting and spiritual Trance music alike. Until then, watch Durand as he continues to scour the earth in search of the essential sunrise and it’s ultimate soundtrack; a beauty that remains hand in hand with his own diverse contributions to the industry.
